Academic Skills Support
The Learning Centre offers academic support programs to all students at UNSW Australia. We assist students to develop approaches to learning that will enable them to succeed in their academic study.
Students can make an appointment for help with academic writing on an individual basis, or assistance with any study-related concern. Consultations involve Peer Writing Assistants (PWAs) and students working together to discuss and explore useful strategies that students can apply to their studies.
Academic Skills Workshops
Each semester. the Learning Centre offers a program of short workshops focusing on academic sklls and tasks.
The Learning Centre is also offering UNSW students an online academic writing workshop series (Moodle self-access) on paraphrasing and summarising skills for assignments such as literature reviews, essays and critical reviews.
The Learning Centre particiaptes in academic orientation programs such as O-Week by running a variety of workshops to help students hone their academic skills and get the most out of their studies.
Conversation Café groups give students an opportunity to practice their 'everyday' English speaking and social language, and build social networks outsie their academic studies. Conversation Café groups are held as small and informal meetings. Each group is limited to 5 students and run for 4 weeks.
The Learning Centre offers some programs specifically focused on the needs of postgraduate students. Some are aimed at postgraduate research students, others assist postgraduate coursework students to develop their skills.
Academic Skills Plus
Academic Skills Plus is a General Education course that aims to help students to improve their academic skills.
Online academic skills resources
The Learning Centre’s resource collection has been developed to assist university students acquire the academic communication skills required for successful study. It includes a large range of academic skills guides to help students with specific tasks. These simple two or four-page brochures are available from The Learning Centre office or the UNSW Current Students website.
Students or staff can also visit The Learning Centre office to access our resource library. We have a collection of books, dictionaries and style guides to aid students in developing their academic writing ability, study and research skills, and improving their communication skills. A number of books on thesis writing are also available for loan. Most resources (except dictionaries and style guides) are available for short loan to enrolled students, staff and visiting academics.
